Another Horizons author!

Benjamin Mollborn, a 7th grader in Pat’s advisory, just found out that a short story that he wrote in Language Arts will be published in the July/August issue of Stone Soup, a literary magazine that publishes writing and art by children around the world.   The title of his story is “Scarlet Spring.” It is a historical fiction short story about a Native American boy and a European boy who meet each other in the Colonial era.

Thank you to Katie for encouraging him to submit his story to Stone Soup.

A Council Meeting NOT To Be Missed!

Dear Families,

This coming Thursday, 3/30 at 6:30 PM we will be having our monthly Council meeting.  This month faculty and I will be explaining our work to date regarding our school-wide visioning process for the future.  We will focus on “why” we do what we do here at Horizons, particularly regarding our core values of creating self-directed learners and community contributors.  We will also be sharing our work on the “how” and the “what” we do to support this kind of innovation here at Horizons K-8.

Now is the time for community-wide input as to your thoughts and questions regarding these innovations.  Over time, this direction will support our decisions as we prioritize our funding in years to come.

One main focus for our visioning is how we prepare students to be engaged learners and contributors in the 21st Century. A framework for understanding this approach are the, now universally accepted, “4 Cs”: Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity.

During our time together, we will be asking parents for your input as to how we might continue to enhance our programming to best prepare our students in these domains.

Please come ready to hear our progress as a school in regard to this vision and to give your input!  This conversation is truly one of the main purposes of our Council and we want to encourage you to attend if at all possible.

We are working on the possibility of having this meeting available as a webcast if you are not able to attend.  Please stay tuned for details to come. Childcare will be available.

Thank you,

The Horizons K-8 Team
