District News
In the Boulder Valley School District, a different approach to teaching is underway in many classrooms that is reshaping how students learn and teachers teach. These classes are using co-teaching models, a collaboration that nurtures a culture of inclusivity and growth in the classroom. The co-teaching instructional model emphasizes three fundamental pillars: student inclusion, exposure to grade-level content standards for emerging bilinguals, and developing and strengthening skills, abilities, processes and resources among teachers.
Boulder Valley School District bus drivers and aides play a crucial role in the school district by transporting more than 5,000 students safely each day. Their work entails a split schedule, with routes operating before and after school hours. But what exactly do they do during the hours in between? Here's a glimpse into their day.
In the Boulder Valley School District, School Safety Advocates (SSA’s) like La’Velle Hamilton are instrumental in providing student support, advocating for student needs, and prioritizing school safety. Hamilton brings a unique perspective to his advocacy work, marked by empathy, understanding and an unwavering commitment to ensuring every student feels secure and valued.
It’s been three years since Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) implemented the Equal School Day. The move in 2021, created a consistent seven-hour school day, four days a week and a district-wide professional learning time (PLT) block of one hour for teachers through a late start on Wednesdays. For teachers and staff, the late start hour doesn’t allow for an extra hour to sleep in or provide more time for general staff meetings to take place. Instead, it gives teachers and staff needed time to come together in focused planning around the needs of the students.
From teaching to advocating for educational equity, Jason Unger, a newly elected member of the BVSD Board of Education, once contemplated a path in law but found his calling in the classroom instead.
